CUBA

10 reasons why Cuba is on everyone’s bucket list:

  1. It’s like time-traveling back to a surreal parallel universe that’s only a few hours away by plane.

  2. Cuba is one of the safest countries in the world with great health care and highly educated people.

  3. The arts in Cuba are truly magnificent! Witness the mesmerizing expressions through music, dance, contemporary art, film, theatre, and literature.

  4. Cubans are exceptionally friendly, charismatic people who treat Americans like family.

  5. The architecture and vintage street life are vast playgrounds for your photography.

  6. Digital detox! The lack of internet connectivity creates an unparalleled opportunity to find renewed pleasure in social connectivity.

  7. Great food and tropical weather! Perhaps the most important part?

  8. The low cost allows for an affordable trip with enough room for your generous profit margin.

  9. The history of Cuba reads like a fast-paced romance novel.

  10. The satisfaction of connecting with neighbors whose access has been forbidden for 65 years is profound.

19 years of experience

As experts in Cuba, we customize any kind of journey in the most enchanting way. We know the country and its people better than any US tour operator.

The following is an outline of our recommended Alumni & Parent tour of Havana and Viñales. We can use this as a template to design a bespoke experience perfect for your community.

CUBA TOUR DETAILS

  • We propose a seven (7) night and eight (8) day educational cultural tour that focuses on a panorama of Cuban culture. Highlights include the opportunity to engage directly with Cuba’s vibrant music community through interactions with prominent local musicians in private and public settings. Insights into Cuba's thriving visual art scene are explored through visits to premier contemporary art centers and schools including personal interactions with local artists in their studio. Participants will delve into the heart of Cuban heritage, starting in Havana's bustling streets blending guided and independent explorations of Habana Vieja's UNESCO plazas. The country's economic landscape will be examined through dialogues with experts like Dr. Ricardo Torres, shedding light on Cuba's unique planned economy and recent reforms. Culinary experiences are interwoven throughout, from dining at renowned paladares such as La Guarida to farm-to-table meals, providing a taste of Cuba's rich flavors. The tour extends to the picturesque Viñales Valley, exposing participants to the traditional tobacco farming process and sustainable agricultural practices at Finca Marta and Finca Agroecológica. The journey culminates in encounters with Afro-Cuban spiritual leaders, community improvement project visits, and a visit to Ernest Hemingway's Finca Vigía. This tour is an invitation to explore the pulsating heart of Cuban culture, where each day is a new verse in the island's ongoing narrative of rhythm, color, innovation, and taste.

  • To comply with the US Treasury’s list of restricted hotels in Cuba, we recommend staying at a combination of boutique private luxury hotels in the Vedado neighborhood prior to an overnight excursion to Viñales and then on to the Melia Innside Hotel Habana Catedral in the heart of Old Havana. In Viñales participants will stay in select bed & breakfasts well positioned on the edge of the valley and town center. This offers a variety of hospitality experiences in two different kinds of settings and an opportunity to explore the most important modern and colonial neighborhoods of Havana.

  • Project Por Amor staff provides smooth logistical operations, full-time translation, and high-quality information about Cuban culture and the political economy throughout the trip. The tour is led by a U.S.-based Project Por Amor tour leader along with Gretell Síntes, our professional Cuban guide and bilingual interpreter who leaves no stone unturned as she navigates the group through our intensive educational program. This trip can be greatly enhanced by the participation of one of your professors along with an Alumni Association staff member (optional). Finally, a Cuban chauffeur will drive our luxury coach bus to all destinations.

  • The group will travel under a General License for Support for the Cuban People: 31 CFR §515.572 (a)(1), §515.560 (c), and §515.574.To fully comply with all the most recent legal guidelines for US travel to Cuba as defined by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, the programs will engage in a full-time schedule of contact with the Cuban people that will result in meaningful support for the private sector of small business operators. We will be contracting most of our services with the private sector. For more information on U.S. Treasury Department OFAC licensing please visit the following website:

    https://home.treasury.gov/policy-issues/financial-sanctions/sanctions-programs-and-country-information/cuba-sanctions

  • Health insurance is provided in Cuba as part of the program cost through the Cuban visitor’s health insurance agency Asistur. Please see the terms of coverage here. We also recommend that each participant purchase Trip Interruption insurance independently with a third-party travel insurance provider, such as Allianz Travel Insurance. References are provided in PPA’s traveler participant post-sign-up communications.

Brochure and tour Itinerary examples:

We have designed the above tour for a minimum of 14 people. The costs vary significantly depending on the number of people splitting the services paid for as a large unit. Therefore, the actual cost per traveler decreases as the size of the group increases. The cost outline in the chart below lists illustrative wholesale prices.

FUNDRAISING POTENTIAL

You choose a retail price that you think will work best. We recommend setting a price that doesn’t change depending on how many people sign up. In this case, you will make the difference between the price paid by the traveler and the actual cost depending on how many people sign up. See the below chart for suggested prices with your per-traveler profit margin according to the number of pax if prices were set to $4,995 for double and $5,995 for single occupancy.

Notice that larger groups are far more economically viable than small groups. Your profit margin grows exponentially as the number of participants increases because you make more per person multiplied by more people.

BOTTOM LINE

Total profit for a group of 10 double and 6 single occupancy travelers: $11,240 ($7,070 +$4,170)
Total profit for a group of 16 double and 10 single occupancy travelers: $39,062 ($24,112 + $14,950)

ICELAND

10 reasons why Iceland is also on everyone’s bucket list:

  1. It’s like traveling to another planet with a completely different palette of colors, light, topography, and other elements, probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

  2. Iceland is ranked as the safest country in the world with great health care and a culture of educated and progressive intellectuals.

  3. The music community in Iceland is experiencing a magnificent renaissance that is truly inspiring. It also has one of the world’s richest literary traditions.

  4. Although more stoic than Cubans, Icelanders are also friendly, proud, and heartwarming hosts.

  5. The high design that is integrated into almost all things is wonderful. You will not find anything subpar in Iceland.

  6. Iceland is statistically considered to be the best place in the world to be a woman. It’s the world’s oldest-running democracy and it’s a leader in sustainability and eco-friendliness.

  7. It has the cleanest tap water you’ll ever drink, the best fish you’ll ever eat, and the freshest air you’ll ever breathe.

  8. Almost every little town and neighborhood has a public geothermal pool and many luxury spas will provide some of the most rejuvenating experiences.

  9. The raw power of geology uniquely shapes everyday life and offers visitors an incomparable opportunity to learn about Earth’s dynamic processes. If we’re lucky, you might even witness the majesty of an active volcano.

  10. The pulse of ancient myths still beats strongly in Iceland; tales of Norse gods, Vikings, elves, trolls, fairies, and dragons weave through the national consciousness, infusing every journey with enchantment.

Optional Experience Enhancers

Our meaningful add-ons for both Cuba and Iceland are designed to elevate the potential of cultural engagement and deepen the level of learning beyond the limits of the tour.

Take one-on-one virtual Spanish or Icelandic language classes with a private Cuban or Icelandic teacher before and after the trip. Maximize the learning potential with a tailored longer-term program of study and mentorship that is anchored by travel. Focus on relevant vocabulary, local lingo, and cultural etiquette. Arrive with the ability to ask questions, share thoughts, build rapport, and understand nuances. This will also give confidence and enrich travel by kickstarting interaction with a local to learn about other topics before arrival. Participants will go out with their teacher in person and continue virtual classes inspired by the rich experiences they had.

Linguistic Labs

Travelers can extend their journey at their own pace, pursue unique interests, and immerse themselves in the local communities. Do professional research or network by using additional time to connect with local professionals and artists they met on the tour. Open doors to potential collaborations or deeper cultural insights. Pair this with our Linguistic Labs to continue in-person language study. Or, they can simply explore more parts of the island for personal discovery. We’ll extend hotel reservations and provide individualized guidance to help fulfill their interests.

Exploration Extensions

Sponsor local artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs to foster a genuine solidarity between cultures. Promote mutual respect and understanding that can resonate beyond the politics of Cuba and the United States. This will not only enrich travelers’ experience but also contribute to sustainable cultural growth, fulfilling a profound responsibility to enhance the places they visit. Participants can choose from several legal and impactful ways to positively elevate the local cultural economy. This international stewardship fulfills the US Treasury’s purposeful travel to Cuba guidelines in an unprecedented way.

FAQs

  • We’ve produced tours for as few as ten people or as many as seventy-five. Both small, medium, and large groups will work and have different advantages. But we recommend a sweet spot of 25-30 paying travelers. This size allows enough people to keep the price low and your profit margin high, cover the costs of extraordinary high-cost activities, and allow for a fun group dynamic, while still being small enough to feel personal, nimble, and intimate.

  • We recommend going to Cuba between October and May and Iceland between late May and early September.

  • Your safety is our top priority. We provide on-call assistance for any emergencies, safe and secure accommodations and transportation, and in-country medical insurance. We only travel to countries that lead the world in the lowest crime levels and best health care systems.

  • We recommend visiting Iceland in the summer and Cuba in the winter or spring. Cuba is too hot in the summer and September and October is hurricane season. People love visiting the warm tropics when it’s cold at home. Iceland is ideal in the summer when the weather is nice, the wildflowers bloom, and the daylight is everlasting. However, the winter is good to avoid crowds and witness the Aurora Borealis.

  • Our adventures are specially designed to foster meaningful connections, allowing your community to bond with each other over unforgettable shared experiences. Opportunities for intensive group learning and new experiences stimulate endless conversation throughout the program. It is common for travelers to develop close friendships that continue correspondence and organize reunion get-togethers years after they return.

  • Planning a tour at least a year out works best. This gives us enough time to design the perfect experience, reserve our first-choice accommodations, and announce the opportunity before participants plan other travel for the year. The earlier we start, the easier it is to be successful. However, many prices and bookings are not available more than eighteen months ahead of time.

Travelers assume responsibility for their physical abilities to travel. PPA and their agents reserve the right to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the trip any time before departure or during the trip should the person’s health or physical condition or general deportment impede the operation of the program, in which case no refund will be given.

Optional Activities: Optional activities furnished by independent suppliers not affiliated with PPA carry with them various inherent risks that can cause serious personal injury. Should you elect to participate in such activities while on this program, you must understand that participation will be at your own risk.

Acts of God and Like: PPA is not liable for acts of God, fire, acts of governments or other authorities, wars, civil disturbances, riots, terrorist acts, strikes, thefts, pilferage, epidemics, quarantines, natural disasters, dangers incident to sea, land and air travel and other similar acts or incidents beyond its ability to control.

Photography Consent: Traveler grants PPA the absolute right to copyright, re-use, publish and reproduce any Personal Images (photographs and video records) taken while participating on the PPA Tour. These Images will be used free of charge by PPA for educational and PPA promotional purposes. The Images will not be sold to a third party.
