The Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans and Project Por Amor have partnered to create a seven-day immersion into the Crescent City during the one week of the year when three of its founding cultures step into the streets — and almost no outsiders know it’s happening. Between March 16 and 22, St. Patrick’s Day, St. Joseph’s Day, St. Joseph’s Night, and Super Sunday converge, and we’ll be on the inside of all of it: pouring drinks with the family who runs the Irish Cultural Museum, visiting the towering St. Joseph’s Altars that Sicilian parishioners spend weeks building, and — rarest of all — walking through the night beside Big Chief Shaka Zulu and the Golden Feather Hunters as the Black Masking Indians appear in their hand-sewn suits of beads and feathers. We’ll sleep at the legendary Hotel Monteleone, founded by a Sicilian shoemaker in 1886 and still family-run five generations later; eat red beans and rice in the Tremé living room of jazz trumpeter Leroy Jones while he plays just feet away; lunch at Dooky Chase’s, where Leah Chase fed the Civil Rights Movement; and stand with Dr. Ibrahima Seck on the grounds of Whitney Plantation, where America’s history demands to be understood. Guided throughout by Tulane geographer Richard Campanella and the city’s leading historians and culture bearers, this is a weeklong seminar disguised as a celebration — the story of three peoples who built New Orleans, and in doing so, built America. We hope you will join us.

“The trip to New Orleans couldn’t have been better! What a pleasure to experience a somewhat familiar city in a totally new way! Sage and the Preservation Resource Center put together a group of out-of-ordinary experiences — a history of jazz piano in the pianist’s house, an incredible lecture by the city’s foremost urban geographer, great meals, historic tours and almost daily concerts.” — Linda Mack, Architectural Critic, Minneapolis
“Though I had lived in New Orleans for 10 years, the Project Por Amor opened my eyes to places I had never known. It was a perfect trip in every sense. Can’t say enough good things about it.” — JoAnn Busattil, Art Collector, Santa Monica
“For anyone with limited experience with New Orleans and its culture, this tour is an amazing introduction. It will expose you to the rich culture and deep 400+ year history of New Orleans. You’ll learn why this city of 400 thousand attracts up to 18 million tourists a year.” — Tad McKee, Texas
“No detail was too small. Truly a side of NOLA that few see. I loved every minute. Music, food, culture and such an interesting group. I would absolutely do it again!” — Wendy Knight, Texas
